If there’s one ingredient I advise that you add into your diet it would be turmeric. The benefits you derive from this powerful root are endless and if consumed in the right way it can be a potent ingredient to ward off illness or to help heal the body. One of the best ways to ensure you get a daily dose of turmeric is by making a golden paste.

Benefits of turmeric

Turmeric contains compounds with medicinal properties known as curcuminoids, the most vital being curcumin. This antioxidant has strong anti-inflammatory effects and combating inflammation is the first step to ensure you have a healthy functioning body. Low levels of inflammation help protect the body against illnesses such as heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s and various degenerative conditions.

Another benefit of curcumin is that it boosts brain function and lowers the risk of brain diseases. Studies are showing that it could also help to improve the memory and increase intelligence.

When it comes to heart disease curcumin improves the function of the endothelium, which is the lining of the blood vessels. Additionally it reduces inflammation and oxidation which are both necessary to fight heart disease.

Recent studies are showing that curcumin is a beneficial ingredient when it comes to cancer treatment and prevention. It reduces the growth of new blood vessels in tumors and the spread of the cancer while also aiding in the death of existing cancerous cells. In tests done on animals it showed that a diet high in curcumin helped to inhibit the growth of tumors.

In addition to these numerous benefits it has been found that curcumin is effective when it comes to treating depression and can boost the brain neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine.

These are just a handful of the many benefits a diet high in turmeric can provide you.

How to consume

Just because it is healthy to consume turmeric, it doesn’t mean that you should just open a pack and eat it by the spoonful. The first thing to note is that turmeric alone does not absorb well in the bloodstream, therefore eating it on its own would be a waste of a powerful product.

The best way to ensure it is absorbed into the blood stream is to consume it with black pepper. Black pepper contains piperine, which is a natural substance that enhances the absorption of curcumin. Curcumin is also fat soluble that means it is best when consumed with a fat.

This is why we recommend making golden paste, which has just the right amount of pepper and healthy fat in the form of virgin coconut oil. This paste takes a few minutes to prepare and can keep in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to a month.

Once you have the paste you can get creative with it:

- Add a spoonful to tea with some honey and a splash of milk

- Whisk it in with some milk and drink cold

- Blitz a dollop with your smoothies

- Toss it with your cooked rice or noodles with it

- Spread it on cooked chicken breast or fish

- Add it to your hummus

If you’d rather not have the hassle of adding it to your food you can portion it out as little dollops on a baking sheet and freeze as pills which you can then just swallow on a daily basis. It is best to consume ¼ of a teaspoon 2 – 3 times a day.

How to make it

For best results use pure organic turmeric power and high quality virgin coconut oil. Put the turmeric and water in a pot and bring to a boil then reduce to a very low simmer. Stir until the water is absorbed and you have a thick paste. This will take up to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and add in the pepper and oil and stir till well combined. Allow it to cool and then put it in a jar to store in the fridge.
